The Ocean View at Villa Cosima from the terrace

Bienvenue à tous! I’m delighted to take you along on my journey to Villa Cosima, a luxurious family villa nestled on the exclusive Cap d’Antibes. This charming villa offers not only an oasis of Mediterranean beauty but also places us close to the charming town of Antibes. Known for its rich history, cobblestone streets, and captivating coastal views, Antibes has a distinctive allure that is simply timeless and a pleasantly slower pace than many of its glitzy neighbourhoods. When Isabelle, the villa’s gracious owner, invited me to experience her family’s sanctuary, I knew I was in for an unforgettable treat.

Just a quick drive away, the town of Antibes, originally settled by the Greeks as Antípolis is a place of historical charm with its fortresses, Provençal markets, and hidden coves. Renowned artists and celebrities alike have found inspiration here: Picasso famously lived and worked in Antibes for six months in 1946 and left many of his artworks to the city, establishing the Picasso Museum. The nearby Cap d’Antibes has also drawn the world’s elite, with glamorous hotels like the legendary Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, which has hosted Elizabeth Taylor, Winston Churchill, and Ernest Hemingway. Let’s explore Villa Cosima’s charms and my highlights of Antibes.

Villa Cosima: A Sanctuary of Elegance and History

Perched on a scenic bluff with sweeping views of the Mediterranean and the historic ramparts of Antibes, Villa Cosima is a Mediterranean haven blending history and modern elegance. Built in the 1930s, this Italian-inspired villa was lovingly restored by Isabelle’s family, preserving its original character with exquisite terrazzo floors, 1930s painted ceilings, and a beautifully carved marble fireplace. Isabelle has carefully balanced the vintage charm with modern touches, from Italian lighting to custom rattan furniture, creating a warm, intimate space that feels like a family retreat.

Staying in the master suite, the Chambre Bleue, was a highlight. With its colourful, uncluttered style and views of the sea and Antibes, it offered the perfect start to each day, watching the boats drift peacefully on the water. Villa Cosima’s terrace, an ideal spot for sunset aperitifs, became our gathering space, a truly perfect space for alfresco living, with many sun filled moments to take in the vastness of the Mediterranean while enjoying the tranquillity that is offered at this private residence.

Mediterranean Gardens and the Allure of Outdoor Living

Villa Cosima’s gardens embrace the Riviera’s native flora, with olive trees, citrus groves, and towering pines and cactus. A walk through these gardens feels like stepping into a painter’s dream, surrounded by a tapestry of greens and blues. The infinity pool, with blue-grey-green mosaics offers a serene view, with the ocean and old town peaking seductively through the gardens. The depth of my suntan was intensified greatly while lounging around this beautiful pool!

In every sense, the pool, terraces and garden invites you to savour Provence’s vibrant natural beauty. I felt immersed in the villa’s Mediterranean spirit, a perfect escape for those seeking the serenity and charm of the Cote d’Azur and the South of France.

Discovering the Charms of Antibes

Only a few minutes away, the town of Antibes is a haven of history, art, and coastal beauty. Wandering through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, I found hidden courtyards, local art galleries, and bustling cafes~a delightful fusion of the old and new. Antibes has a rich Greek heritage, a fact that’s reflected in its ancient architecture and historic sites.

One of Antibes’ most iconic attractions is the Musée Picasso, set within the Château Grimaldi, a 16th-century fortress overlooking the sea. Picasso lived and worked here, creating many of his masterpieces during his time in the town. Walking through the museum, surrounded by his art in the very place he called home, felt profoundly inspiring. The town is also home to Port Vauban, the largest marina in the Mediterranean, brimming with luxurious yachts. It’s the perfect place for a sunset stroll before heading to dinner.

Cap d’Antibes, just south of town, is a favourite among nature lovers and celebrities alike. Known for its hidden coves and lush green paths, this peninsula offers some of the region’s best coastal walks. Each turn reveals a new view, with emerald coves, sandy beaches, and craggy cliffs with panoramic views of the Mediterranean. The legendary Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, one of the area’s most glamorous hotels, has hosted everyone from Ernest Hemingway to Elizabeth Taylor. Trust me on this, put your hand deep into your wallet and take yourself for lunch at this incredible Hotel, it’s worth it just for the ambience!

Where to Eat in Antibes: A Casual Food Guide

The culinary scene in Antibes offers a delightful mix of classic French and Provençal flavours. Here are my top recommendations for relaxed eating in Antibes:

  • La Petite Escalle: Tucked away in the old town, this charming bistro serves up seasonal, locally sourced French cuisine with international twists. The intimate setting and changing menu make every meal here feel like a special occasion.
  • Don Juan – Chez Jules: Located in the heart of the old town, Don Juan is known for its refined Provençal dishes, such as steamed cod with aïoli, and stuffed courgette flowers. Across the street, Chez Jules offers a bistro-style alternative, and the third restaurant features Italian-inspired fare, all under the same ownership.
  • Plage Keller – Le César: On Cap d’Antibes, Plage Keller is a beautiful beach club perfect for a leisurely lunch. Known for its grilled John Dory with sauce vierge and truffle-covered veal chops, this spot offers laid-back dining with panoramic views. A Riviera classic, why not make a day of it and hire beach beds for the day!

Why I Love Antibes

There’s something truly special about Antibes that has captivated me year after year. The town’s balance of history, art, and natural beauty creates a unique atmosphere that embodies the spirit of the French Riviera. Each visit reveals new facets, making every stay unforgettable.

One of my favourite aspects of Antibes is its picturesque Old Town, with narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and charming shops and cafes. The local markets, especially the Marché Provençal, add a vibrant touch to daily life. Filled with fresh produce, cheeses, and artisanal crafts, it’s a place where both locals and visitors come together, offering a taste of authentic Provence.

Antibes’ coastal scenery is nothing short of breathtaking. Whether it’s lounging on a sandy beach, taking a peaceful stroll along the Promenade Amiral de Grasse, or exploring the Cap d’Antibes, the vistas are always mesmerising. The town’s historical sites, like the Picasso Museum and Fort Carré, add layers of cultural richness, making Antibes a truly inspiring place for a photographer of Provence and a traveller alike.

The dining experiences in Antibes are also a standout. From casual beachside cafes to gourmet restaurants, the town has something for every palate. I loved savouring the fresh seafood and Provençal specialties, paired with local wines, for a taste that stays with you.

Most of all, it’s the warmth of the people here that makes Antibes feel like home. Locals are genuinely proud of their town, welcoming visitors with open hearts and sharing their love for the Riviera. For history buffs, art lovers, foodies, or those simply seeking a place to unwind, Antibes offers an experience that is as beautiful as it is diverse.
