As a photographer in the South of France I am blessed with a plethora of colours, sunshine and of course the famous light that attracted masters of the arts such as Picasso, Matisse and Cezanne to this magical part of the world.  And while I shoot 80% in colour I also have more than a little obsession white black & white images.

Photography master Ted Grant on the subject ~ “When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!” I couldn’t have said it any better.

I shoot in digital so my images are always shot in camera in full colour, converting certain images into black and white in the editing stages.  More often than not, I can immediately tell that an image deserves to be in black & white to really tell or display the emotion of the image.  When humans look at black and white images their eye is immediately drawn to the face in the picture, and so, removing the colour really enhances the emotion of the image. In addition to this, there is something so timeless about a black & white image, it stays classic and elegant forever, no fads no fuss, just simple beauty.
